NSFAS: First-Time Application Flow

First-time NSFAS applications take patience. Nothing here replaces NSFAS — it helps you line up documents before you click submit to prevent week-long verification delays.

Required Documents

Gather these before you even open the portal.

Smart ID
Required

Applicant ID

A certified copy of your ID. Must not be older than 3 months.

Ensure the scan is clear and all four corners of the ID are visible. Blurry uploads are automatically rejected by the system.

Signed
Required

Consent Form

The official declaration form signed by your parents/guardians.

Download this form directly from the NSFAS website. It allows NSFAS to legally verify your parents' income with SARS.

Payslips
Required

Proof of Income

Latest payslips or affidavit of unemployment for parents.

If your parent is unemployed, they must provide a sworn affidavit from the police station stating they have no formal income.

Use your legal names exactly as they appear on your ID. Typos here cause massive verification delays.

Complete Application

Fill out the online form. Do not leave mandatory fields blank. Use a reliable internet connection to prevent timeouts.

Upload Documents

Upload the certified PDFs. Ensure no file is larger than 2MB.

Track Status

Check your portal weekly. If it asks for 'Outstanding Documents', upload them immediately.
